Chairperson Story | Council Members

Roles and Responsibilities

We have a council meeting every Tuesday fortnight. We make decisions about our community to make sure that our community is running well. We over see the store, the garage, the clinic and the women's centre.

We talk about things like CDEP. Make sure the young people are working, not standing around getting bored. We get them doing things like wood collection for the old people.

Also, when we discuss to change something in the community - after the council meeting, the next day we always have a meeting with the community and discuss what the council wants to change.

If the community says yes, we do it, we change it. If they say no, we leave it at that.

The council is responsible for running the office and employing the advisor and other workers in the community.

Elections

Elections of councilors happens every November and councilors are elected for one year at a time. Elections take place in the council room supervised by the school principal. Each candidate has a box with their photo on it and each community member places tickets in the box. The candidates with the most tickets are elected to council.

The new councilors then all meet each other and sit down and vote for the chairperson. Anybody in the community can put up their name for election, by notifying the community office.
