Anangu School Assistant Teacher
"My name is Evelyn Churchill.
I grew up here at Finke and I have always lived here. I've got one big son
and three daughters who all live here in Finke too.
I've been working at the school for three years now. I started in year 2000.
First I was working with the disability child. Now I'm working as assistant
teacher.
My job is to give all the kids their work. The little ones in transition,
ages four to ten. I sometimes sharpen their pencils and keep making sure
they work and they listen to the teacher. Sometimes they listen, sometimes
they're a bit cranky.
I like my job because I like working with the kids, especially the little
kids. It makes me feel happy when they listen and they do their work. Sometimes
its hard work at the school because it is hard to get the kids to speak
in English when they're in the school.
Last year I went to Darwin with the big kids, the ESL secondary students.
They were doing school work there in one of the high schools. All of their
work comes from that High School in Darwin, so everyone went to meet their
teachers who mark their work.
It was a good trip. Every afternoon we went around everywhere, down to the
beach and shopping. We went there for one week. We haven't been anywhere
this year yet. It's good for the kids to go around and see other cities
and see things. They learn about life in other places."
