Anangu Store Worker
"My name is Joyce Wingfield I live in Aputula now, after moving here
from Bore 22 in the APY lands. I lived the best part of my life in
Whyalla and in Iron Knob. I have four children, three boys and a girl.
I have five grandchildren, four boys and a girl. My sons are still
living in Whyalla, and my daughter just recently moved to Melbourne.
I used to visit Aputula all the time, and I've been actually living
here for twelve months. When I first came here, we used to clean the
streets, me and Ray, and then I started working in the store. I think
the food in the store is very expensive. The meat isn't bad, that's
about the cheapest thing you can get, because the meat is packed in
Alice Springs and we get good prices. But everything else is too costly.
Some of the things are ridiculous really. For 'Black and Gold' honey
we are paying seven dollars here!! And for a small tin of milo eight
dollars!! How much are the prices in town? The food in the store is
quite healthy though, we always have fresh fruit and veggies. Today
there is some coming on the plane, and we'll get another load when
he goes next Wednesday. The main thing I would like to see change
about the store, apart from the prices, is to make the store bigger.
It is way too small. We need more freezer spaces and more space in
general. I do enjoy working here at the store. I stock and pack the
shelves and the meat freezer. And do the marking. Those are the main
things I do or whatever else is needed. It keeps me on my toes."
