Irintata Homelands was created in 1984. A group of Anangu Pitjantjatjara decided that they needed separate representation and an administrative body that worked exclusively with homelands. Homelands, designated locations where traditional owners chose to live, were created. They began often by the construction of a bore with a windmill and water tank attached.

Irintata Homelands as an incorporated body is responsible for six homelands, with the administration office located in the Kaltjiti Community (Fregon). The location of each homeland varies from 10 to 80 km in a radius around Kaltjiti Community.

Each homeland has current projects that evolve in accordance with the requests from the Irintata Council and homeland representatives. The aim of Irintata Homeland is to provide opportunities for Anangu Pitjantjatjara people to be gainfully employed in meaningful, sustainable, and long term forms of employment.

Irintata Indigenous Food Project

The aim of the 'Irintata Indigenous Food Project' is to give the Anangu of the Irintata Homelands access to the markets the indigenous food industry has to offer. This project will give Anangu work collecting indigenous food also creating an income from the sale of the food. This project is aimed at utilizing the produce that is already available on the lands that wont need planting, watering or continual maintenance.

Indigenous Protected Areas Project

The Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA) Project is an agreement between the Federal Government and Traditional Owners. It is an internationally recognised conservation area with various IUCN (Internation Union of Conservation Nature and Natural Resources) categories. It aims at using a combination of traditional and contemporary ecological knowledge. Robin Kankanpakaitja (Walalkara Homeland) has worked with AP Land Management to create the agreement and a country management plan. There's a large tract of land surrounding Walalkara Homeland that will be incorporated in this new initiative. It is hoped that this agreeent between Robin and the Federal Government will provide all Anangu Pitjantjatjara people the opportunity to utilise their traditional skills and be renumerated accordingly.
