The Kalka Store is following very closely the excellent 'Mai Wiru' Policy, which combines the provision of healthy foods and Anangu involvement at all levels. Kalka Community has decided to take this policy on and really implement the ideas, so much so that this store is run entirely by Anangu. What makes this store an excellent example of community cooperation is that all the profits are to be used for the Kalka Community.

Some of the distinctions with this store are:

• There is no book up at all,
• Anangu do all the ordering, unloading of the truck, cleaning of the store, working of the cash registers, pricing of all products,
• No Coca Cola.

Kalka Community has made clear its goals for the Store which include:

• This Store will sell healthy food at low prices.
• They will not charge high prices to make a big profit.

The vision of the Store is very clear as well; This Store will be run by Anangu, they will learn to run it properly, they will learn to do all the jobs themselves – ordering the right food, working out the right prices, making sure everyone pays, sending money to the bank, making sure there is always enough money to buy more food and pay the bills. By doing this the Anangu of Kalka Community will be responsible for the jobs of their young people and not using the Communities money to pay some whitefella to work here. This Store is doing everything that it has set out to do.

General Hygiene Items include: nappies, toilet paper, tea towels, tissues, dust pans, washing powder, Jiff, insect spray, Trix, scourers sponges, soap, soft soap, shampoo, conditioner, baby wipes

Tinned Goods include: tomatoes, beans, vegetables and steak, tongues, beans, mixed vegetables, peas and carrots, corned beef, spaghetti and meatballs, spaghetti and sausages, soup, fruit salad and baby food.

General on the shelf items include: Peanuts, Dried Apples, Prunes, Oats, Vita Brits, Pasta, Noodles, Deb and Plain Flour, soup packets, gravox, tomatoes puree, peanut butter, vegemite, BBQ sauce, caesar sauce and soy sauce.

Fridge Items include: brown bread, cheese, two fruits, ham, eggs, cheese sticks, apples, oranges, carrots, cucumber, sweet potatoes, pears, lemons, pumpkins, bananas, and onions.
Apple juice, spring water, diet lemon cordial, Paradise Punch and orange juice, milk and skim milk.

Frozen Items: cooked turkey legs, chickens and chicken parts, T-bone steak, spare ribs, mince and B.B.Q. steak, malu tails.

Hardware Items: electric kettles, DVD players, CD’s, shirts, hats and dresses, candles, car tubes, vehicle oil
