Turkey Bore Community was incorporated as a separate community in 1989. Prior to 1989, four family groups lived at Turkey Bore before there were permanent power and water supplies established. Turkey Bore comprises of three separate homelands: Turkey Bore, Balfour Well, Tjutjinpiri. Four family groups still occupy Turkey Bore community. The Community has its own CDEP program which facilitates art and craft endeavours, a bakery, market gardening, and landscaping activities. Turkey Bore is located on the Pitjantjatjara Lands in South Australia. The climate is extreme ranging from bush fires to floods with summer temperatures typically reaching 46 degrees. The nearest neighboring community is Umuwa, 12 kms. to the south. The current chair person is Rosemarie Armstrong. Rodney Purampi is the traditional owner. Turkey Bore is a Christian community with a Council policy of no alcohol and no petrol. Community members perform a wide range of various artistic pursuits including acrylic painting, wood carving, raffia basket making, woolen clothing items such as beanies. The Community also operates a small bakery as CDEP activity with bread being produced on a weekly basis. The bread is sold at a neighboring community store. Two small market garden areas have been established with a variety of fruit trees including figs, mulberries, oranges, limes, and grapes at Balfour Well and Turkey Bore. |
