Arts and Crafts | CDEP | Clinic | Community Office | Community Kitchen | School The community kitchen has been running since Zanee arrived in the community, nearly three years ago. Originally, Zanee's dad, Tjamu Leigh originally got the building started when he used to live here for sixteen years as the Essential Services Officer. Tjamu Leigh had returned to the community to live out his retirement and he suggested that Zanee come up and get the kitchen started. The kitchen provides school lunches for the kids each day. This takes the pressure off parents who don't have access to a shop. Catering also happens here for things like school dance competitions, sports days and other special events. The kitchen provides a community pantry or store which stocks basic food, kuka (meat), bread, milk and canned goods as well as cleaning products and personal hygiene items. This is an essential service for the community as the nearest store is forty kilometres away on dirt roads which are impassable in the rain. The kitchen store assists members of the community in a number of ways. People can access food late in the pay week (when most people have run out of money) and also the prices are reasonable as Zanee only charges ten percent on cost for freight and electricity. |
